The Detroit Lions experienced a premature end to their 2024 season due to a rash of injuries, and just five games into the 2025 campaign, they’re once again finding themselves spending plenty of time in the training room.
Starting cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, along with left tackle Taylor Decker, have been major concerns heading into the Week 6 clash with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the Lions may now have another issue to monitor — star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
According to The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy, St. Brown did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. This news follows an incident during Sunday’s victory over the Cincinnati Bengals when St. Brown appeared to land awkwardly on his shoulder. Although he continued to play, the discomfort may be carrying over into preparations for Week 6.
Amon-Ra St. Brown’s Injury Could Be Huge Setback for Lions Ahead of Chiefs Matchup
Despite already dealing with a string of injuries, losing St. Brown would mark Detroit’s most significant blow so far. The 26-year-old receiver has recorded at least 100 receptions and 1,100 yards in each of the past three seasons, and he’s off to another spectacular start with 35 catches for 407 yards and an NFL-leading six touchdowns through five games.
BMissing St. Brown would hurt both statistically and schematically. While Jared Goff’s 75.2% completion rate currently leads the league, much of his success has come through his connection with St. Brown. Meanwhile, Jameson Williams has been quiet, posting two or fewer receptions in each of his last four contests.
If there’s any encouraging takeaway from Wednesday’s report, it’s St. Brown’s toughness. The Pro Bowl receiver has missed just two games in his NFL career and once played through Hand, Foot and Mouth disease during the 2023 season — a moment captured in the Netflix documentary Receiver.
Dr. Jimmy Liao of The Lions Wire suggested that St. Brown could be managing a right AC joint sprain and likely underwent an X-ray to determine its extent. Though it may affect his practice schedule, Liao added that the injury shouldn’t linger long-term.
With a primetime meeting against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on deck, Detroit hopes to have its top weapon available. Still, St. Brown’s health will remain one of the biggest storylines leading up to Sunday night’s showdown.
