The NFL’s free agency period kicked off with a wave of activity, as teams rushed to complete signings and trades. With many deals now being finalized, the focus is beginning to shift toward the upcoming NFL Draft.
Even so, several teams are still figuring out what their 2026 rosters will ultimately look like. The Detroit Lions have been among the more active organizations in recent weeks, making a number of important moves ahead of the draft.
However, the team has also been dealt some difficult news on the defensive side of the ball. Safety Brian Branch is still in the process of recovering from an Achilles injury, and there is now a more defined outlook on his availability. Recent reports indicate he is unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season.
This development is a tough setback for Detroit’s defense, which has already felt his absence since he went down late in the year against Dallas. Branch quickly emerged as a key contributor, playing a major role in the team’s success.
The former Alabama standout and Pro Bowl defensive back became one of the defense’s most impactful playmakers, helping the Lions make a deep playoff run to the NFC Championship Game in 2023.
Detroit only had a limited opportunity to see Branch and pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson share the field at the same time. During that stretch in 2023, the team looked like a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Now, the Lions may have to wait longer before seeing that pairing again. Depending on how his recovery progresses, Branch could miss a significant portion of the 2026 season.
Over his time with Detroit, he has put together an impressive stat line, including seven interceptions, 4.5 sacks, 20 tackles for loss, and a defensive touchdown.
