Detroit Lions Reveal Game-Changing Update Ahead of Playoff Push

The Detroit Lions have made a significant roster decision as they push through a crucial stretch of the season. With wide receiver and return specialist Kalif Raymond sidelined by injury, the team has officially elevated Tom Kennedy into a permanent role — a move that has excited both coaches and fans.

Tom Kennedy Locked In as Lions’ Kick Returner

Kennedy, a longtime practice squad standout, has stepped up in a major way since Raymond went down. After being promoted to the active roster, Kennedy impressed immediately on special teams, averaging 27.0 yards per kick return and adding a 21-yard punt return in his first game this season.

Against the Dallas Cowboys, Kennedy delivered one of Detroit’s best return performances of the year, bringing all three kicks back past the Lions’ 40-yard line. His strong play earned him the trust of the coaching staff.

Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp confirmed this week that Kennedy will remain the team’s primary kick returner even when Raymond is cleared to return.

“Kalif’s obviously an incredible player for us… but I definitely see Tom Kennedy being part of the kick return game,” Fipp told Pride of Detroit. “I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am for Tom. There’s nobody who deserves the recognition more than him.”

A Breakthrough Moment for a Hard-Working Veteran

Kennedy has spent most of his seven seasons in Detroit fighting for opportunities. Last year, he played in just four games with only one target and no receptions. He logged 16 offensive snaps and 20 special teams snaps.

His last recorded reception came in 2022, when he posted eight catches for 141 yards in a larger role.

After years of grinding behind the scenes, Kennedy is finally getting his moment — and making the most of it.

Lions Adjust After Losing Sam LaPorta for the Season

Kennedy’s promotion came shortly after Detroit suffered another major setback: rookie star tight end Sam LaPorta was ruled out for the season.

Head coach Dan Campbell said hopes of a return this year are “very, very slim,” though he confirmed LaPorta’s recent back surgery was successful.

“The good news is the procedure went really well long-term,” Campbell said.
