Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs: Furious and blazing

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was a mix of thunder and lightning in the Detroit Lions’ 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

The former Alabama standout tallied 17 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns, along with three catches for 82 yards. Gibbs became the first player in team history to post at least 135 rushing yards and 80 receiving yards in one game, a feat that’s been achieved 33 times across the NFL.

On Monday, Gibbs ripped off a 78-yard touchdown run — the longest play from scrimmage of his NFL career. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, he reached a top speed of 22.23 mph on that run.

That mark was the fastest recorded by any ball-carrier in Week 7 of the 2025 NFL season and the third-fastest overall this year.

Only one player tops Gibbs on the 2025 speed leaderboard: Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, who clocked 22.38 mph on a 43-yard reception in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos before being forced out of bounds by former Alabama star Patrick Surtain II.

Gibbs owns the second-fastest speed of the season at 22.34 mph on a 42-yard rush in Week 2 versus the Chicago Bears.

Gibbs’ performance Monday also earned him the Angry Runs scepter, presented weekly on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” by Kyle Brandt.

Brandt highlighted Gibbs’ toughness and determination on a fourth-and-1 rush on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Detroit went for it from midfield, attempting to fool Tampa Bay with an end-around option. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown pitched the ball to Gibbs, but the Buccaneers had read the play and appeared ready to stop him in the backfield. Instead, Gibbs powered forward and muscled for the first down.

Gibbs ranks fifth in rushing yards with 526, fifth in total yards from scrimmage with 720, and tied for third in touchdowns with seven this season.

Gibbs and the Lions return to action against the Minnesota Vikings at noon CST on Nov. 2 at Ford Field in Detroit. The Lions have a bye in Week 8.
