Detroit Lions S Brian Branch to Challenge Suspension

Per a report from NFL Network, Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch is set to appeal his one-game suspension following his postgame confrontation with Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

The NFL issued the suspension on Monday, sidelining Branch without pay for one game after reviewing footage of the altercation, which took place just moments after Detroit’s 30–17 defeat on Sunday Night Football.

Branch’s Explanation

Branch has acknowledged that he allowed his emotions to take over during the intense moment.

“I did something immature,” Branch admitted. “I’m sick of players doing things between plays and the refs don’t see it… I shouldn’t have done it. It was immature.”

Reports indicate the incident originated from an uncalled block in the back earlier in the game that frustrated Branch. Upset with what he viewed as inconsistent officiating, Branch approached Smith-Schuster at midfield after the game, sparking a brief scuffle that was broadcast live on national TV.

Next Steps for Branch and the Lions

If Branch’s appeal is denied, he will be forced to sit out next Monday’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and can rejoin the active roster the following day. His absence would be a significant setback for Detroit’s secondary, already dealing with injuries to Kerby Joseph, Terrion Arnold, and D.J. Reed.

Branch, earning $1,379,250 this year, would lose $76,625 in game salary if the suspension is upheld.

With the Lions sitting at 4–2, they now gear up for a pivotal Monday Night Football battle against Tampa Bay, a contest that could heavily influence the NFC playoff race.
