The Detroit Lions could be heading toward significant roster changes this offseason after finishing the 2025 campaign with a 9–8 record and missing the NFL playoffs.
Detroit has already begun reshaping its coaching staff. Head coach Dan Campbell fired offensive coordinator John Morton after just one season, a move that felt inevitable after Morton was stripped of play-calling duties in Week 10. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Lions have also shown interest in former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, signaling a desire to upgrade the offense heading into 2026.
While coaching changes are already underway, attention is now turning to the Lions’ roster — and running back David Montgomery may be one of the biggest names to watch.
Brad Holmes Addresses David Montgomery’s Future
During Thursday’s end-of-season press conference, Lions general manager Brad Holmes acknowledged that Montgomery’s future in Detroit is far from certain.
“Those are discussions that we’re going to have a lot more in depth, in terms of what is the best plan for him going forward,” Holmes said via The Detroit News. “Is it somewhere else, or whatever the case be? Just really appreciate everything that he has done for us, if it does end up going that way. I hope it doesn’t because we love David Montgomery. He’s a good football player.”
Holmes’ comments strongly suggest that a potential offseason trade involving Montgomery is at least on the table.
Trade Speculation Grows Around Montgomery
Speculation intensified late in December when fans noticed Montgomery “liked” an Instagram comment suggesting he request a trade.
“I love you bro, but you should request a trade,” the comment read. “The way they’re treating you and glazing Gibbs is atrocious. Look what happens when we don’t use you. We lose.”
Montgomery has been a productive piece of Detroit’s offense since joining the team in 2023, totaling:
2,506 rushing yards
33 touchdowns
562 carries
Despite his production, the emergence of Jahmyr Gibbs has shifted the offensive balance, leading to questions about Montgomery’s long-term role with the franchise.
What a Montgomery Trade Could Mean for Detroit
If the Lions ultimately decide to move Montgomery, it could open the door for Gibbs to take on an even larger workload while potentially freeing up cap space and draft assets for roster improvements elsewhere.
For now, Montgomery’s status remains uncertain, but Holmes’ remarks make it clear the Lions are evaluating all options as they prepare for a pivotal offseason.
