Detroit Lions veteran Tom Kennedy made a lasting impression when he earned a game ball from head coach Dan Campbell, highlighting that success in football isn’t just about physical measurables.
Lions special teams coach Aaron Fipp shared a story from his father, a Vietnam-era pilot, emphasizing the intangible qualities that make great players. “They can test mental ability, physical skill, all sorts of things,” Fipp said. “But what they can’t measure is what’s in your heart and your mind. That’s the greatest thing about this game too — some things just can’t be quantified.”
Kennedy’s dedication and perseverance were on full display. “When it comes out like it did for him in that game, it’s incredible to watch,” Fipp explained. “The power of the human spirit, a guy who wants to make a play and refuses to let the opportunity pass — you just can’t measure that. Sometimes a player waits years, watching others get turns, and when the chance comes, he just lets it rip. It was awesome to see.”
Tom Kennedy to Remain Key Kick Returner for Detroit Lions
With Raymond back from an ankle injury, the Lions now have two skilled returners to deploy. Fipp clarified Kennedy’s role: “He’ll be back there on kickoff returns. Punt return’s tough because you usually only have one guy, maybe two, but Kalif is obviously our punt returner. Tom Kennedy will definitely contribute to the kick return game.”
The addition of multiple returners also helps balance the workload for the Lions’ offensive stars. “It takes some load off Leaf, who plays a lot of offense for us. These guys can still make big plays, but this helps manage their reps,” Fipp added.
Kennedy’s story underscores that football success isn’t only about speed, strength, or measurable stats — heart, persistence, and seizing opportunities often make the difference.
