Detroit Lions Waive Tight End Ross Dwelley Following Arthur Maulet Signing

The Detroit Lions made a notable roster move by waiving veteran tight end Ross Dwelley after re-signing cornerback Arthur Maulet, signaling a shift in positional priorities as the team prepares for the final stretch of the 2025 NFL season.

Dwelley, a former San Francisco 49ers tight end, appeared in 11 games for Detroit and recorded two receptions for 11 yards in his first season with the team. His release comes as the Lions reshuffle their depth chart in an effort to strengthen their secondary.

With Dwelley no longer on the roster, Anthony Firkser and Hayden Rucci are now the only tight ends on the Lions’ 53-man active roster. Fullback Giovanni Ricci remains on the practice squad, while Shane Zylstra has returned to practice but continues to deal with a lingering knee injury.

Injuries continue to impact the Lions’ defense as safety Thomas Harper remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol. His availability for the upcoming matchup against the Los Angeles Rams remains uncertain.

Head coach Dan Campbell addressed the team’s mindset for the final month of the season, emphasizing a win-or-bust mentality as Detroit fights to stay alive in the playoff race.

“The approach hasn’t changed. We’ve got to win,” Campbell said. “Last year we were chasing the No. 1 seed. This year, we’re fighting to get back into position. Nothing changes — we have to play better, and we will.”

The Lions now shift their full focus to a critical road matchup against the Rams, as they look to build momentum and keep their postseason hopes alive.
