The Detroit Lions’ search for offensive coordinator help may have just gotten more interesting.

After promoting John Morton into a larger role that ultimately failed to spark consistent offensive creativity, the Lions are expected to explore outside options this offseason. Head coach Dan Campbell has acknowledged the need to evaluate his staff, and fans who watched Detroit’s offense stagnate at times during the 2025 season know changes could be coming.

That’s why the latest name to hit the coaching market — Kliff Kingsbury — should immediately catch the attention of the Lions’ front office.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Kingsbury and the Washington Commanders mutually agreed to part ways after the team failed to reach the postseason. Pelissero added that while Kingsbury is expected to pursue head coaching opportunities, he could also be a top candidate for offensive coordinator openings around the league.

Lions Should Strongly Consider Interviewing Kliff Kingsbury

The Lions would be wise to at least request an interview.

Kingsbury helped unlock the full potential of Jayden Daniels in 2024, guiding one of the league’s most dynamic offenses and playing a major role in Washington’s postseason victory over Detroit that same year. His offensive creativity and quarterback-friendly system stand in stark contrast to what the Lions lacked at times under Morton.

Kingsbury is expected to draw interest from teams like the Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Giants for their head coaching vacancies, with New York viewed by some as the most attractive landing spot due to its quarterback situation.

He was also previously linked to the Browns’ offensive coordinator job last offseason, though a deal never materialized. A return to those discussions could make sense — but Detroit should not hesitate to enter the mix.

Why Kingsbury Makes Sense for Detroit

Despite offensive line issues and early-season chemistry problems between Jared Goff and Morton, the Lions still possess one of the NFL’s most talented offensive cores.

Following Week 18, Campbell told reporters he planned to spend time evaluating his coaching staff, including decisions at both offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. General manager Brad Holmes is also scheduled to address the media later this week, which should provide further clarity on how much turnover to expect.

While Kingsbury may not ultimately land in Detroit, he should be one of the first calls the Lions make as they explore options to upgrade their offensive leadership.
