The Detroit Lions’ search for a new offensive coordinator may include a familiar name.
Just hours after the Lions fired offensive coordinator John Morton, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that former Lions quarterback David Blough is “a sneaky hot name” to watch for the vacancy.
Could Blough, a former Detroit starter, be on the fast track to a major coaching promotion?
David Blough’s Football Background Stands Out
Before reaching the NFL, Blough was a record-setting quarterback at Purdue. He finished his college career:
2nd in school history in passing touchdowns (69), behind Drew Brees
4th all-time in passing yards (9,734)
6th in single-season passing yards (3,705 in 2018)
Despite entering the NFL in 2019 as an undrafted free agent, Blough quickly found his way to Detroit after being traded from Cleveland before the regular season.
Blough’s Time With the Detroit Lions
Injuries forced Blough into action early in his Lions tenure. He made his first NFL start on Thanksgiving Day in 2019 and finished that season as Detroit’s starter.
Across three seasons with the Lions, Blough:
Appeared in 7 games (5 starts)
Completed 100 of 184 passes
Threw for 1,033 yards and 4 touchdowns
Added a rushing touchdown and a receiving TD
Over his entire NFL career — including a stop with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022 — Blough played in nine games, totaling:
1,435 passing yards
6 touchdowns
9 interceptions
While his on-field production never stood out, Blough earned praise for his football intelligence.
Dan Campbell Has Long Praised Blough’s Football IQ
Lions head coach Dan Campbell has spoken highly of Blough in the past, calling him “a smart football player” who has “seen it.”
That familiarity could work in Blough’s favor as Detroit looks for an offensive coordinator who understands Campbell’s philosophy and locker room culture.
Blough’s Coaching Experience Is Growing Fast
After his playing career ended, Blough immediately transitioned into coaching.
Joined Washington’s staff in 2024 under Dan Quinn
Served as assistant quarterbacks coach for two seasons
Took on additional duties as interim quarterbacks coach late in 2025
At just 30 years old, Blough would become one of the youngest offensive coordinators in the NFL if hired.
Lions Offense Took a Step Back in 2025
Detroit’s offense regressed slightly after Ben Johnson departed to become the Chicago Bears’ head coach.
2024 (Ben Johnson):
33.1 points per game (1st in NFL)
149.4 rushing yards per game
2025 (John Morton):
28.3 points per game (tied 4th)
120.1 rushing yards per game (14th)
Despite still ranking among the league’s better offenses, Detroit missed the playoffs, and Campbell eventually took over play-calling duties.
What’s Next for the Lions?
Whether David Blough ultimately lands the job or not, the next Lions offensive coordinator will inherit a talented roster with proven playmakers.
Given Campbell’s trust in Blough and his rapid rise in coaching circles, this is a name worth watching closely as Detroit reshapes its staff for 2026.
