The C.J. Gardner-Johnson stint with the Baltimore Ravens has come to an abrupt conclusion.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Ravens are parting ways with the 2022 interceptions leader only a week after adding him to their practice squad. Schefter reported that Gardner-Johnson’s agent, Kevin Conner, described the move as “an amicable mutual decision.”
“After Baltimore made a trade for another safety, we wanted a clearer opportunity for C.J. to play,” Conner explained.
Just last week, the Los Angeles Chargers sent safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for linebacker Odafe Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round selection.
Now a free agent again, Gardner-Johnson will seek his fourth team of the season. The veteran defensive back played a crucial role for the Philadelphia Eagles last year, helping them defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX this past February.
In March, Philadelphia dealt Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans in return for offensive lineman Kenyon Green and a 2025 fifth-round pick. Though he started Houston’s first three games, reports of locker room tension led to his release shortly afterward.
Before rejoining the Eagles last season, Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions for the 2023 campaign.
After appearing in the first two games, the Lions placed him on injured reserve following a torn pectoral muscle suffered in a Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Gardner-Johnson returned for Detroit’s season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, recording his lone interception in that matchup. He wrapped up his Lions tenure with 17 total tackles (16 solo), three pass breakups, and one interception across three games and two starts.
