Giants charge Coach Following Another Late-Game Collapse Against Lions

The New York Giants appeared in control against the Detroit Lions in the fourth quarter, but star running back Jahmyr Gibbs broke through for 49- and 69-yard touchdown runs in the final quarter and overtime, allowing the Lions to escape with a 34-27 victory.

Quarterback Jameis Winston, who threw two touchdown passes and caught another, expressed the team’s urgency after the game. “We’re desperate for a win,” Winston said. “That’s the mindset everyone in the locker room shares. We came here ready to compete against one of the NFL’s top teams, but we fell short. We need to figure out how to get it done, and we’re willing to do whatever it takes.”

Following their sixth consecutive loss, the Giants decided to make another change on the coaching side.

Earlier in the season, the team dismissed head coach Brian Daboll after starting 2-8. Just two games later, interim head coach Mike Kafka relieved defensive coordinator Shane Bowen of his duties after the Giants surrendered 34 points and nearly 500 yards in Sunday’s matchup.

This defeat marked the fifth time this season the Giants have lost a game after holding a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. The team currently ranks last in the league in total yards allowed and third-worst in points allowed per game, giving up an average of 27.8.

Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will step in as the interim defensive coordinator.
