How the Spurs should change their roster

We are on the precipice of the NBA Finals and a month away from the 2024 NBA Draft. Soon the 2023-24 NBA season will be behind us and all eyes will turn toward how to dethrone the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks or Minnesota Timberwolves as NBA Champions. The San Antonio Spurs got a head start on that work, focusing on the draft and free agency to improve the team from its 22-60 record last year.

Rumors are flying around as to how exactly they will do that. Especially in the NBA Draft where they have the fourth and eighth picks. Last week, The Athletic’s Kelly Iko fueled conversations about the Spurs drafting UCONN wing/guard Stephon Castle. In a roundup of draft chatter, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony mentioned the Spurs having eyes on college guards, Reed Sheppard and Devin Carter. Givony also linked French wing, Tidjane Salaun, to San Antonio.

The Spurs will also have an estimated $19 million in cap space that they can use to acquire free agents or take on mid-sized contracts in a trade. If San Antonio elects to draft wings like Castle or Salaun, a “stop-gap” point guard could be acquired to sure up that position. Or the front office could elect to add more veteran shooters to space the floor around Victor Wembanyama and other paint-oriented prospects.

When assembling a squad to complement Wembanyama, the Spurs appear to have a plethora of options this summer. That is the fascinating thing about this offseason! Tell us which players you would target, please. Please fill out the survey below and share your thoughts in the comments section. Later this week, we’ll be back with the findings.
