Adam Schefter: The 49ers’ intention to trade Brandon Aiyuk this offseason was “never serious”

As we enter the dog days of summer, the speculations about Brandon Aiyuk from the 2024 NFL offseason have intensified. But look don’t  worry—Adam Schefter is here to squash any rumors about a trade right now.

The ESPN news anchor discussed a number of NFL subjects on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday, including Brandon Aiyuk’s situation. The standout wide receiver for the San 49ers is presently awaiting a significant contract extension.

amid reports that the negotiations are stagnating. This in turn has sparked rumors that a deal is imminent, particularly in light of the player’s critical social media posts. This week, Schefter firmly stated that the 49ers do, in fact, want “BA” back, dispelling some of the suspicions.

For the record, let me say that the 49ers want Brandon Aiyuk back, no matter what he says. But, they don’t want him back as much as he thinks, at the price that he’s seeking.

And so, that’s where the breakdown occurs at this point in time, Schefter said to McAfee and his viewers on Friday. Schefter went on to say that the 49ers and Aiyuk were getting close to finalizing a deal a while back, but that was before the wide receiver market burst, with competitors like Jaylen Waddle, Devonta Smith, and Amon-Ra St. Brown commanding deals that were close to $30 million over several years.

Naturally, Aiyuk would want to get a bargain at comparable prices. However, the 49ers haven’t agreed to meet him at his asking price as of yet, which is why there is a standoff.

Despite the holdout, San Francisco has reaffirmed their desire to retain Brandon Aiyuk for the long run, rejecting trade proposals made before the 2024 NFL Draft. The Niners have always wanted Brandon Aiyuk back, Schefter continued, “but I think the number might have changed in his mind.”

The Niners never intended to trade him, and they want him back, but they are now unable to come to an agreement.

Other teams have inquired about his availability on a few occasions. According to Brandon Aiyuk, that means “they don’t want me anymore.” No, they want him here, but not at the exact number he desires to be there.
