Cristiano Ronaldo nearly averted major harm after a fan jumped from the stands and landed in front of him during Portugal’s Euro 2024 defeat to Georgia. Portugal has already advanced to the knockout stage before facing Georgia in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night.

Despite starting Ronaldo, Roberto Martinez’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat. Ronaldo expressed frustration after being substituted in the 66th minute, making Euro 2024 his first major tournament without scoring in the group stage.

But, surprisingly, that wasn’t the most shocking part of the 39-year-old’s night. As the Manchester United and Real Madrid icon walked down the tunnel after full-time, a fan jumped from the seats and crashed directly in front of the Portugal captain.

He would have landed straight on top of Ronaldo if not for a steward’s quick and daring actions, who threw himself in front of the player to keep him out of danger. The horrifying encounter left Ronaldo obviously stunned but unharmed, but it is unclear what happened to the fan in question.

The incident may raise concerns about security at the Euros, particularly for Ronaldo, as Portugal’s triumph over Turkey was repeatedly delayed due to pitch invasions. At least six fans rushed onto the pitch to take selfies with Cristiano Ronaldo, causing Ronaldo to become agitated.

‘I think we all adore a fan that recognizes the huge star and the big icons, but you can understand that there is a very, very tough moment if those intentions are incorrect.’ The manager then added: “Cristiano is an experienced player who has spent more than 20 years with the national team.” ‘

He understands what it means to be supported, not just by national team fans but also by football fans. Intrusions are harmful and detrimental to football’s image; they are not representative of the game we want to witness. Portugal will play Slovenia in the last 16 on Monday, July 1 at 8pm, and all involved hope this marks the end of fan incursions.
