Middle-aged pop music and film fans are fuelling a new boom in pop memorabilia auctions, experts have revealed.
Sotheby’s is about to offer under the hammer prized possessions including one of Prince’s guitars and an Abbey Road piano used by Sir Paul McCartney and Amy Winehouse among many more stars.
The auction house is increasingly turning to pop culture as opposed to more traditional fine art or historic artefacts – with people who have grown up since the advent of rock’n’roll increasingly keen to snap up souvenirs of their favourite acts.
Sotheby’s in London will be putting both on exhibition and on sale a new ‘Pop Culture’ selection – at a time when vintage collectors are increasingly using TikTok to showcase buys such as Marilyn Monroe lipstick and guitars signed by Pink Floyd.
Among the lots is a Steinway grand piano which was resident at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios – in Studio 3 – between 1973 and 2016.
