Former Detroit Lions kicker Austin Seibert is set to join the Commanders, according to reports.

Sources have informed NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that free-agent kicker Austin Seibert is set to join the Washington Commanders.

This decision comes swiftly after the Commanders released kicker Cade York on Monday afternoon.

York had a challenging performance during the Commanders’ 37-20 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, missing two field goal attempts from 47 and 56 yards.

His struggles led to his release, creating an opportunity for Seibert, who became available after being cut by the New York Jets in August, to sign with Washington.

Seibert, 27, is known to Detroit Lions fans. After the Lions went through several kickers following Matt Prater’s departure in 2020, they acquired Seibert off waivers just before the 2021 season began.

Over his two seasons with Detroit, Seibert successfully made 13 of 17 field goal attempts and converted all 17 of his extra point tries. However, in October 2022, the Lions waived Seibert to accommodate Michael Badgley.

Aside from his time with the Lions, Seibert has also played for the Jets and now the Commanders.

He has previously been with the Cleveland Browns, who drafted him in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, as well as the Cincinnati Bengals and the New Orleans Saints.
