Charles Harris, a former Detroit Lions defensive end who led the team in sacks in 2021, is set to join the Carolina Panthers, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Harris spent three seasons with the Lions, appearing in 36 games (21 starts) and accumulating 92 tackles, 10 sacks, and three forced fumbles.
Harris had a standout performance in 2021, his first year with Detroit, where he achieved career highs with 65 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles across 17 games (14 starts).
His impressive season earned him a two-year, $14 million contract extension.
However, his 2022 campaign was marred by a groin injury, limiting him to just six games. Before the 2023 season, Harris restructured his contract, agreeing to a $3 million pay cut to remain with the Lions.
With his contract expiring in 2023 and the Lions opting not to re-sign him, the team chose to invest in younger talent like Josh Paschal and James Houston, and signed Marcus Davenport from the Minnesota Vikings.
The Panthers, seeking to enhance their pass rush, brought Harris in for a workout on August 29, and he is now poised to sign with them.
In addition to his tenure with Detroit, Harris has played for the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins, who drafted him 22nd overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.
