The Dallas Cowboys are being advised to quickly sign a former starter from the 49ers and Rams.
The Dallas Cowboys, after a strong 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns on September 8 and a high-profile four-year contract extension for quarterback Dak Prescott, are still being advised to strengthen their roster.
Despite the impressive opener, Matt Holder of Bleacher Report has identified several areas where the Cowboys could use reinforcements.
Holder has pointed out that the Cowboys’ most pressing need is at center, followed by left tackle, running back, linebacker, and second cornerback.
He specifically recommends signing free-agent cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon.
Witherspoon, formerly with the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, and most recently the Los Angeles Rams, is still available despite a solid 2023 season.
He played every game for the Rams, logged a career-high 14 passes defended, and allowed a low passer rating of 76.7 when targeted.
Holder finds it surprising that Witherspoon remains unsigned and believes his experience and recent performance make him a good fit for the Cowboys, especially with DaRon Bland on injured reserve.
Additionally, Holder suggests considering Clelin Ferrell, currently with the Washington Commanders, as a potential 2025 free-agent acquisition.
With DeMarcus Lawrence approaching a contract year and other key players potentially leaving, Ferrell could serve as a valuable backup or insurance policy.
He could provide depth on early downs and offer reliable backup in passing situations, depending on the development of rookie Marshawn Kneeland.
In summary, while the Cowboys have started the season strongly, there are strategic moves they could make to address vulnerabilities and prepare for future changes in their roster.
