The Detroit Lions have cut the defensive tackle they brought in for Week 1.

The Detroit Lions have released defensive lineman Chris Smith, who had been signed to cover for DJ Reader during the team’s Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

With Reader anticipated to make his debut this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions are now back to a 52-player roster after waiving Smith. In the Lions’ 26-20 overtime victory over the Rams on Sunday Night Football, Smith logged eight defensive snaps, marking his first-ever regular-season game action at the age of 24.

Smith was with the Lions last year, rotating between the practice squad and the main roster. Given his familiarity with the team, he could potentially return to the Lions in the future. For the season opener, the team had promoted Kyle Peko from the practice squad, as Reader was among the inactives.

Smith’s brief stint with the Lions was notable, especially since he had received commendations from fellow defensive lineman Alim McNeill prior to his release.

McNeill highlighted Smith’s unwavering dedication to his career and noted that although Smith had not played in-season snaps until Week 1, he had always demonstrated the talent necessary for success in the league.

Despite the roster move, Smith’s previous contributions and his commitment to the sport have been recognized as significant, underscoring his potential for future opportunities.
