The Cleveland Browns have signed veteran tight end Geoff Swaim to their practice squad as insurance following the injury to David Njoku.
Njoku is expected to miss several games due to an ankle injury sustained during the Browns’ season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
The injury, which left Njoku wearing a right walking boot, will sideline him for at least a couple of games, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland
Swaim, who has a decade of NFL experience with teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, and Arizona Cardinals, has appeared in 100 games and started 65 of them.
Over his career, he has accumulated 110 receptions for 846 yards and 6 touchdowns.
His most notable seasons were in 2018 with the Cowboys and in 2021 with the Titans.
With Njoku out, Jordan Akins, the Browns’ second-string tight end, is expected to step up.
Akins has been with the team since 2023 and has played in all regular-season games during that period, recording 18 catches for 159 yards.
Additionally, tight ends Blake Whiteheart and Cameron Latu are on the Browns’ practice squad and may be promoted to the active roster before the team’s next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Browns’ offense struggled against Dallas, particularly quarterback Deshaun Watson, who had a subpar performance with 169 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions.
Analyst Dan Orlovsky suggested that the team might need to consider switching to backup quarterback Jameis Winston, given Watson’s inconsistency.
Winston, the No. 1 overall pick in 2015, has a substantial career record with over 22,000 passing yards and 141 touchdowns.
