Detroit Lions

The Lions’ former sack leader is now joining the team with the league’s worst record.

Charles Harris, formerly with the Detroit Lions, has found a new team as the NFL approaches Week 2. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Carolina Panthers are set to sign the edge rusher.

This development follows the end of Harris’s stint with the Lions, who acquired him as a free agent in 2021 after four lackluster seasons with the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons.

Harris rejuvenated his career with the Lions in 2021, recording a career-high 7.5 sacks and earning a two-year contract.

However, his productivity declined in 2022, and an injury ultimately placed him on injured reserve. Despite taking a pay cut to remain with the Lions in 2023, Harris’s performance didn’t improve.

By Week 7, he was a healthy scratch, and through the rest of the season, he played only 65 snaps, with just 11 of those coming in the final three games.

The Panthers’ decision to sign Harris is not unexpected; they had previously worked him out, and he has a connection to their defensive line coach Todd Wash, who previously held the same role with the Lions.

Harris’s prolonged availability suggested his NFL future was uncertain, but his successful 2021 season with the Lions kept his career alive.

Now, with the Panthers, who are currently struggling, Harris has an opportunity to prove himself once again, with both sides having little to lose from the arrangement.
