There is a strong push for the Cowboys to quickly bring on board a former starter who played for both the 49ers and Rams.
The Dallas Cowboys are being advised to urgently sign a former player from the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams to bolster their roster.
On September 8, the Cowboys delivered a strong performance against the Cleveland Browns, securing a 33-17 win.
Additionally, they made headlines by extending quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract for four years, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL.
Despite this impressive season opener, Matt Holder of Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department has identified areas where the Cowboys could use further reinforcement.
In a September 9 article analyzing the most pressing needs of each team before Week 2, Holder praised the Cowboys for their robust performance against the Browns.
However, he highlighted several critical areas of concern, particularly the center position, left tackle, running back, linebacker, and second cornerback. For immediate improvement, Holder recommends that the Cowboys sign cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon.
He noted that Witherspoon is an experienced cornerback, which is especially valuable with DaRon Bland starting the season on injured reserve.
Holder expressed surprise that Witherspoon is still a free agent, given his recent performance. Despite past injury issues, Witherspoon had a standout season, starting all games for the Rams and recording a career-high 14 passes defended.
His performance was notable for allowing a low passer rating of 76.7 when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Holder emphasized that Witherspoon’s availability aligns well with the Cowboys’ need for a seasoned cornerback, given his prior starting experience and recent strong showing. In a February 2024 “Free Agent Spotlight” on the Rams’ website, writer Stu Jackson described
Witherspoon as a “stabilizing veteran presence” in the Rams’ secondary. Jackson highlighted that Witherspoon played and started in every regular-season game for the first time in his career, attributing his durability to a new training regimen he adopted in the offseason to maintain better health.
Witherspoon began his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers, where he played from 2017 to 2020. He then signed with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2021 but was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers later that year.
Witherspoon joined the Rams in June 2023.Additionally, Holder suggested the Cowboys consider adding Clelin Ferrell from the Washington Commanders in the 2025 free agency, if available. He noted that DeMarcus Lawrence is entering a contract year and will turn 33 in April.
With other key players like Zack Martin also nearing free agency, this could potentially be Lawrence’s final season with the Cowboys.
While the team hopes that second-round pick Marshawn Kneeland will be ready to step up next year, adding Ferrell could serve as valuable insurance.
Holder pointed out that if Kneeland isn’t prepared to start, Ferrell could contribute during early downs while Kneeland is gradually integrated into the lineup.
At the very least, Ferrell would provide a reliable veteran backup for the defense.
Overall, the recommendations highlight strategic moves the Cowboys could make to address immediate needs and prepare for future roster changes.
