Buccaneers’ Injury Woes: Three Starters Out for Game Against Lions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be missing at least three key starters for their game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Coach Todd Bowles has confirmed that defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr., and right tackle Luke Goedeke will be sidelined, along with reserve cornerback Josh Hayes.

Cornerback Zyon McCollum, who sustained a concussion in the season opener, remains in the concussion protocol but has been practicing throughout the week.

Bowles indicated that McCollum must still pass certain tests to be cleared, with the latest opportunity for him to do so being Saturday.

Starting defensive end Logan Hall, who was out last week due to a foot injury, is also listed as questionable.

Additionally, starting nickelback Tykee Smith missed practice on Thursday and Friday due to illness.

Bowles mentioned that Smith’s status for the game will be determined based on how he feels closer to game time.

Kancey injured his left calf earlier in September, while Winfield sprained his right foot and ankle in the last game.

Goedeke sustained a concussion, and Hayes is dealing with an ankle injury. In their absence, Justin Skule will start at right tackle, and Christian Izien is expected to fill in for Winfield.

If Smith cannot play, Izien might shift to nickelback, with Kaevon Merriweather potentially stepping in at safety or Tavierre Thomas covering the nickel position.

Bowles expressed confidence in the team’s depth, emphasizing that these situations provide valuable experience for other players.
