Derrick Barnes has become a vital component of the Lions’ defensive lineup.

Derrick Barnes, who showcased his versatility in Week 1, has become a crucial element of the Lions’ defense.

In last year’s Divisional Round playoff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Barnes made a decisive interception that secured the Lions’ spot in the NFC Championship Game. Despite this significant play, Barnes is approaching the upcoming rematch at Ford Field as just another regular season game.

Barnes emphasized his focus on the present, stating, “I have to go out and try to have the same expectations for myself and try to make more big plays.”

In Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams, Barnes played the second-most snaps among the Lions’ linebackers, with 64, behind only Alex Anzalone, who had 78.

The defensive strategy involved less use of nickel packages, aiming to force the Rams into a passing game, which they did.

Barnes was utilized in various roles during the game.

According to Pro Football Focus and Next Gen Stats, he played as an edge rusher, in the box, as a standup rusher over a guard, an off-ball linebacker, and even in the slot covering receivers. Despite his raw stats of four total tackles, including three solo, his impact was substantial.

Head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have both praised Barnes for his flexibility and mental sharpness.

Barnes appreciates their confidence, noting, “It’s a blessing that my coaches believe in me to do that. It’s amazing to see different aspects of the field and be able to play inside, outside, and make plays.”

Barnes’ role, which was anticipated due to his college experience as a defensive end at Purdue, was fully realized in Week 1. He expects his role to evolve each week, and he has hinted that he may play more on the edge against the Buccaneers.

Regardless of his specific duties, Barnes is expected to remain a key player in the Lions’ defensive schemes throughout the season.
