Lions Uncertain About Penei Sewell and Marcus Davenport’s Availability Against Bucs

It remains uncertain whether Detroit Lions All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell or defensive end Marcus Davenport will be able to play this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Both players missed the last two practices, though coach Dan Campbell mentioned they would attempt to involve them in Friday’s session.

Campbell stated, “We’ll see if we can get Sewell and Davenport out there a bit today.

It’s still unclear whether they’ll be able to play, but we’ll find out.”UPDATE: Sewell returned to practice on Friday, but Davenport did not.

Campbell was asked if Sewell’s situation was similar to Taylor Decker’s last season, when Decker played through a high-ankle sprain in Week 1 but missed the subsequent two games.

Campbell clarified that Sewell’s injury is different.“It’s a bit more medial compared to that,” Campbell explained.

“It’s healing, and we’re just being cautious.”If Sewell is unable to play, Dan Skipper is likely to start at right tackle.

Skipper, a veteran offensive tackle, has started six games in his seven-year career, including a game last season when Decker was sidelined.Regarding Davenport, Campbell noted that the return of DJ Reader this week would help address the potential gap.“

The positive news is that Reader is back this week,” Campbell said.

“His return adds more flexibility to our defensive line. With Reader, Peko, McNeill, Onwuzurike, and Paschal, we can cover various positions from nose tackle to 3-technique and big end, so we can manage the load if Davenport can’t play.”
