Baker Mayfield’s scoring run lifts the Buccaneers to a 20-16 victory against the Lions.

Baker Mayfield made a significant impact in the playoff rematch between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Detroit Lions.

Late in the third quarter, Mayfield sprinted for an 11-yard touchdown run, giving the Buccaneers the lead for good in their 20-16 victory. He also converted a crucial third down with another 11-yard run just before the touchdown.

Mayfield, who called the run the longest touchdown of his career, managed to evade several defenders. Tampa Bay (2-0) only trailed briefly and held off Detroit (1-1) from scoring in the closing moments.

The Lions had two chances to take the lead but turned the ball over on downs twice—first at the Bucs’ 6-yard line with 53 seconds left and again at their 26-yard line with just 2 seconds remaining.

Lions coach Dan Campbell reflected on a critical mistake he made in the first half, which led to a penalty and wasted time that could have been used for a short-field goal attempt. “It’s a huge error on my part,” Campbell admitted, acknowledging that this misstep might have cost his team the game.

Detroit’s quarterback, Jared Goff, threw two interceptions and missed other scoring chances, finishing with 307 yards on 34 of 55 passes.

The Lions struggled in the red zone, converting only 1 of 7 attempts. Mayfield was efficient, completing 12 of 19 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown to Chris Godwin, who had seven catches for 117 yards.
