Dallas cowboys

Rumors of Cowboys trading Lance to Dolphins are unlikely, as Tua isn’t retiring.

The idea that the Dallas Cowboys could trade third-string quarterback Trey Lance to the Miami Dolphins in a favorable deal is unrealistic for several reasons.

First, many assume that Tua Tagovailoa will retire due to his recent concussion issues, but that’s not the case.

Tua, 26, has reportedly decided against retiring and is consulting medical specialists to help him return to the field. This was his third concussion in a little over two seasons, but he remains determined to keep playing.

Secondly, Lance is not seen as a viable starting quarterback option. The Dolphins already have a solid backup in Skylar Thompson, who has playoff experience, making him more proven than Lance.

Dallas acquired Lance from the 49ers for a fourth-round pick, but so far, the experiment hasn’t worked. Lance couldn’t even surpass backup Cooper Rush on the Cowboys’ depth chart.

Lance could possibly be a backup in Miami, but he would have to outplay third-stringer Tim Boyle. Even then, the Dolphins have other options, such as former Dolphin Mike White on the Bills’ practice squad or ex-starter Ryan Tannehill, who’s currently available. Additionally, Lance is not seen as valuable; he’s expensive ($5.4 million guaranteed), on an expiring contract, and hasn’t proven himself yet.

The Cowboys would love to trade Lance for a premium pick or a player like rookie running back Jonathan Brooks, but there’s no reason for the Dolphins—or any team—to make such a deal. Miami recently signed Tyler “Snoop” Hundley from the Ravens’ practice squad, a quarterback with playoff experience who even made a Pro Bowl. Unlike Lance, acquiring Hundley cost Miami nothing.

In reality, quarterbacks like Hundley are viewed as better options than Lance. Tua isn’t stepping aside, and no other team appears interested in Lance. For now, the Cowboys are the only team tied to him, mainly because they have no other choice.
