The Dallas Cowboys suffered a tough 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints on September 15, leaving them at 1-1 heading into a challenging Week 3 matchup against Baltimore.
NFL writer Matt Holder, in a Bleacher Report article, highlighted the team’s weaknesses and suggested that the Cowboys consider signing former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zach Cunningham to address their defensive issues, especially against the run.
Holder noted that while the Cowboys’ linebackers performed well in Week 1, they struggled against Saints running back Alvin Kamara, who totaled 115 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Cunningham, a former second-round pick for the Houston Texans, could help shore up the Cowboys’ defense, particularly in stopping the run game. Though currently a free agent, Cunningham was previously with the Eagles, where he had an underwhelming 2023 season.
According to writer Devon Platana, Cunningham’s inconsistent tackling and coverage issues made his time with the Eagles forgettable, raising concerns about his overall effectiveness.
In addition to suggesting Cunningham, Holder also recommended that the Cowboys target wide receiver Tutu Atwell from the Los Angeles Rams in 2024 NFL free agency.
With veteran wideout Brandin Cooks approaching free agency and turning 31, Atwell could be a younger, more affordable option for Dallas. Known for his speed, Atwell could serve as a deep threat, though he would be a slight downgrade from Cooks overall.
