Detroit Lions

Lions add another ex-UFL kicker to their practice squad.

As the Detroit Lions approach the 2024 season, the kicker position was one area of uncertainty, but after two games, they have had no issues.

To bolster their roster, the team signed kicker Matthew McCrane to the practice squad on Wednesday.

This move isn’t a reflection of Jake Bates’ performance, as the rookie has been perfect so far, making all five of his field goals and three extra points, though all kicks have been under 40 yards.

The addition of McCrane provides depth, especially after the New York Giants claimed veteran Greg Joseph from Detroit’s practice squad.

McCrane had a strong showing in this spring’s UFL season, ranking just behind Bates in field goals made (16) while attempting two fewer, giving him an 80% success rate with a long kick of 58 yards.

At 30 years old, McCrane had a notable college career at Kansas State from 2014 to 2017 and has since been with several NFL teams, mainly competing for roster spots without securing a starting role. He has also performed well in spring leagues like the UFL.

While Bates has done an excellent job thus far and is expected to continue, McCrane’s signing ensures that the Lions have a viable alternative if need
