Breaking: Emmitt Smith believes the Cowboys could potentially make a move regarding their running back situation.

Dallas Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith believes the team will make a move—either at running back or along the offensive line—before the season ends.

Following the Cowboys’ 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2, Smith expressed concern, citing weaknesses in the team’s running game, offensive line, and run defense. In an interview with ClutchPoints, Smith admitted he expects Dallas to address these issues soon.

“Eventually, they’re going to make a move, period,” Smith said on behalf of his partnership with Depend. “Whether it’s at running back or along the offensive line. There are some holes on offense that need fixing. It’s not just the running game.

Sure, they’re averaging a certain number, but how many attempts are they getting? Are the backs being used to catch passes and ease the pressure on Dak Prescott? There’s a lot that needs correcting.”

Dallas’ rushing attack has struggled, ranking 26th in yards and yards per attempt through two games. The team ranks 19th in rushing touchdowns despite bringing Ezekiel Elliott back.

Smith points out, however, that Dallas hasn’t fully committed to the run, ranking 24th in attempts, with Elliott and Rico Dowdle combining for nine receptions.

It’s worth noting Dallas’ defense allowed touchdowns on six straight possessions against the Saints, forcing the Cowboys to play catch-up and abandon the running game.

Dallas began the season lacking depth at running back, starting the year with an aging Elliott. They did sign Dalvin Cook, a four-time Pro Bowler, though Cook remains on the practice squad.

Although head coach Mike McCarthy hasn’t set a date for Cook’s debut, Smith expects it to happen soon.

“The sooner, the better,” Smith said. “Having Cook, Elliott, and Dowdle gives you more options and schemes. It doesn’t change everything, but it adds talent that can make plays for you. Right now, we need more versatility in our offense.”

The Cowboys will soon learn if a move is necessary as they host Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. Though the Ravens are 0-2, they finished the 2023 season with the NFL’s best record at 13-4.
