Lions Assign Top Linebacker to Injured Reserve Following Significant Knee Injury

The Detroit Lions are facing injury challenges on both offense and defense.

Tight end Sam LaPorta remains sidelined due to an ankle injury, and several players, including defensive end Marcus Davenport and right tackle Connor Galvin, have been placed on injured reserve (IR).

In a significant blow, the Lions are now placing standout linebacker Derrick Barnes on IR after he sustained a knee injury during last Sunday’s victory against the Arizona Cardinals.

This means he will be unavailable for at least the next four games.According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Barnes, a key player on Detroit’s defense, is officially on IR following his injury.

His absence will create a considerable gap for head coach Dan Campbell to fill, as Barnes was one of the team’s top defensive assets.

Barnes’s loss will greatly affect the Lions’ defensive lineup.

As a starter, he contributed significantly, recording 10 total tackles this season, with eight of those being solo efforts.

He became a crucial figure during the 2023 postseason when he intercepted a pass from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, securing a victory that propelled the Lions to their first NFC Conference game since 1991.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft from Purdue, Barnes has been with the Lions since 2021. At Purdue, he accumulated 225 total tackles, with 158 being solo, along with 10.5 sacks and one interception.

During his tenure in Detroit, Barnes has established himself as a foundational player for the defense, amassing a total of 205 tackles, four sacks, one interception, and four passes defended.

He is set to be eligible for a return in Week 8 when the Lions are scheduled to face their historic rival, the Green Bay Packers.

There is hope that Barnes will be ready by then, although the severity of his knee injury may lead to a longer absence.

Despite these setbacks, the Lions currently stand at 2-1 and remain strong contenders for a playoff spot in the NFC.

Over the next three weeks, they will face tough opponents: the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Minnesota Vikings.

All three matchups present challenges, and the defense will likely be less formidable without Barnes.

Nonetheless, fans can expect head coach Dan Campbell to motivate the team in the same effective way he has over the previous two seasons.

The Lions will need to rally together as they navigate this challenging stretch while looking to maintain their playoff aspirations.
