Will Brian Branch Miss His First NFL Game? Lions’ Secondary Prepares for Possible Absence
The Detroit Lions may be missing one of their most promising young defenders, cornerback Brian Branch, for their Monday Night Football matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Branch, who was added to the injury report due to an illness, is listed as doubtful for the game, raising concerns about his availability.
From Concussion to Illness
Branch had been working his way back from a concussion suffered in Week 3. He participated in practice on a limited basis on Thursday, followed by full practices over the next two days. This initially cleared him to play, making his sudden illness a surprising twist that may sideline him for his first game this season.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared the update, noting that while Branch had successfully recovered from his previous injury, his status for Monday’s game is now in jeopardy due to his illness.
Lions’ Contingency Plan
Should Branch be unable to play, the Lions will likely rely on Brandon Joseph to step up in the secondary. Joseph has been a capable substitute and could see more playing time in Branch’s absence. Through three games, Branch has been a standout performer, leading the NFL with seven pass breakups, in addition to recording 16 tackles and an interception.
The potential duo of Branch and Joseph has already proven effective, and Joseph’s recent performances have given the Lions’ coaching staff confidence in his ability to hold things down if Branch is unavailable.
Defensive Coordinator Weighs In
Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has praised the impact of both Branch and Joseph, highlighting their ability to challenge opposing offenses. Speaking about his cornerbacks, Glenn noted, “I will tell you this, if I was an offensive coach, I would definitely go in that direction because of the advantages that we give the offense right now. And that’s okay, and we understand that.”
Glenn also emphasized the unpredictability of player development, adding, “You might have first-round guys that are not as productive, and you might have a third-round guy that comes out and blows it out of the water.”
His comments point to the potential that lies in players like Branch and Joseph, regardless of their draft positions, and the excitement surrounding the Lions’ young talent.
Branch’s College Career and Draft Journey
Brian Branch was selected by the Lions in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, with the 45th overall pick. His time at Alabama solidified his reputation as one of college football’s top defensive players. During his college career, Branch won a College Football Playoff national championship in 2020 and earned First-team All-American honors, as well as Second-team All-SEC in 2022.
With such a strong foundation, Branch has quickly made his mark in the NFL, and his absence on Monday would be a significant blow to the Lions’ defense.
The Road Ahead
As of now, Lions center Frank Ragnow is the only player officially ruled out for Monday’s game. While Branch remains doubtful, the Lions’ secondary is preparing to adjust in case their young star is unable to take the field.
In the meantime, Detroit fans will be holding their breath, hoping for a last-minute recovery from Branch as the team faces a tough challenge against the Seahawks.
