Governor Whitmer Proclaims September 30 as Megatron Day to Honor Calvin Johnson’s Legacy
On Monday morning, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer honored former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson by officially proclaiming September 30 as “Megatron Day.”
The announcement comes as Johnson is set to be inducted into the Pride of the Lions during halftime at the Lions’ Monday Night Football game, making him the 21st member to receive this prestigious honor.
A Tribute to an Icon
Governor Whitmer praised Johnson’s contributions both on and off the field. “Calvin Johnson is one of the greatest receivers of all time and embodies what it means to be a Detroit Lion,” she stated. Whitmer highlighted Johnson’s hard work and commitment to the game, noting how he “routinely jumped out of the stadium to make catches no one else would dream of.” Johnson’s influence, however, extended beyond football, as he launched a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships for students and supports small businesses. His work in the community is a testament to his character, said Whitmer, adding, “I am excited to officially declare Megatron Day in the great state of Michigan in his honor.”
A Legacy of Excellence
Johnson’s football career began at Georgia Tech, where he quickly made a name for himself. He set multiple school records, including career receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, and 100-yard games. His accolades include being named an All-American in 2005 and 2006 and receiving the ACC Player of the Year award in 2006. Johnson still holds the top spot in Georgia Tech’s history for career receiving yards and touchdowns.
Drafted by the Lions in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Johnson went on to become one of the most dominant wide receivers in NFL history. His remarkable 2012 season saw him set the NFL single-season receiving yardage record with 1,964 yards, a record that stands today. He was selected to six Pro Bowls and earned three first-team All-Pro honors between 2010 and 2015. These achievements earned him the nickname “Megatron” and a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Honored and Humbled
Reflecting on his career, Johnson expressed deep gratitude for his time with the Lions and the people of Michigan. “I’ve lived nearly half of my life in Michigan and consider this home,” Johnson said. “Playing for the fans of the Detroit Lions was one of the best things about being in the National Football League.” His induction into the Pride of the Lions on Megatron Day, surrounded by family, friends, and former teammates, is an honor that Johnson says he will “always cherish.”
Beyond the Field
Johnson’s influence continues to be felt beyond his playing days. He remains deeply involved in the Detroit community through various charitable efforts, including his annual youth football camp. His dedication to giving back has made him a beloved figure in Michigan, and his work has left a lasting impact on the community.
As Calvin Johnson continues to inspire both on and off the field, Michiganders and football fans across the nation celebrate his legacy, now immortalized through Megatron Day.
