Jared Goff’s outstanding performance guides Lions to a 42-29 victory against the Seahawks.
Jared Goff achieved an unprecedented feat, completing all 18 of his passes and setting an NFL record, leading the Detroit Lions to a 42-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.“
I just handed the game ball to someone else, so I feel terrible,” said Lions coach Dan Campbell.
“I knew he had a fantastic game but wasn’t aware he was perfect.”
The previous record for most consecutive completions without an incompletion was held by Kurt Warner, who went 10 for 10 while playing for Arizona against Houston in 2005.
“It’s an amazing achievement,” Goff commented. “I’m just glad we secured the win.”
Although Goff did have one incomplete pass, it was nullified by a penalty.“I was thinking, does that count?” he recalled.
Additionally, Goff made history by catching a touchdown pass for the first time in his career, receiving a throw from Amon-Ra St. Brown.
He also threw two touchdown passes to St. Brown, making them the eighth pair in NFL history to both throw and catch a touchdown from each other.St.
Brown executed a trick play in the third quarter, tossing a 7-yard pass to Goff, and later caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Goff in the fourth quarter.
Goff, who passed for 292 yards, previously set a personal record by completing his first 14 passes in the Lions’ earlier victory against Arizona, a record that stood for just over a week.
He also connected with Jameson Williams on a pass that turned into a 70-yard touchdown as Williams sprinted past the Seahawks in the third quarter.
With the Lions leading late in the game, they asked Goff to make another throw from his end zone, but he was sacked for a safety with 2:01 left, trimming their lead to 13 points.
The Seahawks (3-1) struggled against a Detroit offense that exploited their injury-riddled defense.“
It shows we aren’t the team we want to be,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald remarked.
Macdonald attempted to convert a fourth-and-4 from the Detroit 39 early in the fourth quarter, but receiver Tyler Lockett was penalized for pass interference while trying to set a pick for Jaxon Smith-Njigba.“
They said he picked the guy, but I think we all saw he never made contact with him,” Smith expressed.
Macdonald opted to go for it again on fourth-and-goal from the Detroit 3 with 2:09 remaining, but Geno Smith threw his fourth consecutive incompletion .
The Lions capitalized on this missed opportunity, extending their lead to 15 points with 5:23 left in the game.
Goff connected with St. Brown on a high pass, which St. Brown snagged while getting both feet in the end zone.In the second quarter, Jahmyr Gibbs contributed significantly with two rushing touchdowns and finished the game with 78 yards.
David Montgomery opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, culminating a lengthy 10-play, 93-yard drive that took over 7 minutes in the first quarter, contributing to his total of 80 yards from scrimmage. For the Seahawks, Smith completed 38 of 56 passes for 395 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown to rookie tight end AJ Barner in the third quarter.
He extended that drive with a successful sneak on fourth down but ended the game with an interception in the end zone thrown to Kerby Joseph, marking Seattle’s first loss of the season.“
Even when we were down 14, we knew we had a chance to come back,” Smith reflected.
DK Metcalf recorded seven catches for 104 yards but had a critical fumble at the Detroit 37 in the first quarter.
Kenneth Walker also had a strong performance, rushing for 80 yards on 12 carries and achieving a career-high with three rushing touchdowns.
INJURIES
The Seahawks faced further challenges when DB Julian Love exited the game due to a thigh injury, adding to the woes of a defense already missing injured DEs Uchenna Nwosu and Leonard Williams, along with LB Jerome Baker. On the Lions’ side, DB Brian Branch was inactive because of an illness, leaving a significant gap in the secondary, while Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow also missed the game due to a pectoral muscle injury.
