Lions’ Early Bye Comes at Key Time for Injuries: Will Brian Branch Be Ready?

The Detroit Lions’ early-season bye, generally not considered an ideal break for NFL teams, is arriving at a pivotal time for the team, especially in terms of recovering from injuries. After a rash of injuries in Week 3, the Lions have seen a turn toward good news, particularly concerning standout rookie safety Brian Branch.

Branch’s Late Downgrade in Week 4

Brian Branch was expected to suit up for the Lions’ Monday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks after a strong showing in practice leading up to the game. Branch had fully participated in practices the Friday and Saturday before the game and was not listed with any injury designation on the final injury report. However, things took a turn on Sunday when Branch was downgraded to doubtful due to an illness.

In Dan Campbell’s era as the Lions’ head coach, a player listed as doubtful has never played, and Branch was no exception. He was ruled out and did not take the field for the game against the Seahawks. In his absence, Brandon Joseph stepped up for his first career start, recording six tackles and playing nearly every defensive snap in the 10-6 victory.

Was the Illness Related to His Concussion?

Branch had previously suffered a concussion in Week 3 after a helmet-to-helmet hit with Arizona Cardinals’ tight end Trey McBride. This left many wondering if his sudden illness before the Seahawks game was linked to lingering effects of the brain injury.

Campbell addressed these concerns during his postgame press conference, clarifying that the illness was unrelated to the concussion. “No, he passed the protocol,” Campbell said, referring to the concussion. “He’s been sick and so we don’t know what that is and it’s not worth it. I don’t know what it is. I know he’s sick, so that’s what it was.”

Although concussions can have non-linear recovery timelines, Campbell’s reassurances suggest that Branch’s illness was an entirely separate issue. With Branch clearing concussion protocol and the Lions staff being cautious due to his illness, it seems the team made the right call in resting him for the Seahawks game.

Will Branch Be Ready for Week 6?

Looking ahead, Branch is expected to be back in action when the Lions return from their bye week to face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. With extra rest during the bye, Branch should have ample time to recover and be at 100 percent for the Lions’ next game.

Despite the concerns, the early bye may prove to be a blessing in disguise for Branch and the rest of the Lions. His return will be crucial as Detroit looks to build on their strong start to the season and continue competing in a tough NFC North.

All signs point to Brian Branch being ready and healthy when the Lions resume action after their Week 5 bye. If his illness clears and no setbacks from his previous concussion occur, the rookie safety will be primed to make an impact against the Cowboys.
