Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions collectively posted a flawless passer rating of 158.3, but Jared Goff’s rating was slightly less

After the Lions’ victory over the Seahawks on Monday night, Troy Aikman discussed on ESPN how the NFL’s official passer rating system could result in Jared Goff not receiving a “perfect” rating, despite his impressive performance.

This discrepancy arises from a touchdown pass Goff caught rather than threw.

As a team, the Lions completed all 19 of their passes for 273 yards, resulting in three touchdowns with no interceptions, leading to a perfect passer rating of 158.3.

However, this rating includes a touchdown pass that Amon-Ra St. Brown threw to Goff during a trick play.

Individually, Goff completed 18 of 18 passes for 292 yards, achieving two touchdowns and no interceptions. This means Goff threw a touchdown on 11.

1 percent of his passes, which is just below the threshold for a “perfect” passer rating.

To achieve that coveted rating, a quarterback must have at least 11.875 percent of their passes resulting in touchdowns, no interceptions, a completion percentage of 77.5 percent, and an average of at least 12.5 yards per attempt.

Goff satisfied three of these four criteria but fell short on the touchdown percentage, resulting in a passer rating of 155.8.

Had the Lions designed a play for Goff to throw a touchdown instead of catching one, he would have achieved a perfect rating of 158.3.

The passer rating system has been the NFL’s standard for ranking quarterbacks for over fifty years, and there’s no indication that it will change anytime soon.

Critics argue that it’s not the most effective method for evaluating quarterbacks, partly due to arbitrary benchmarks like the requirement for an 11.875 percent touchdown rate to reach “perfection.”

Nevertheless, since it’s the official measure used by the NFL, it draws considerable attention from fans and media alike.

The Lions became the 57th team in NFL history to end a game with a perfect passer rating of 158.3, and they are the second team to achieve this feat this year, following the Cardinals in Week Two

.It was certainly a memorable night for Goff, even if the passer rating system suggests he didn’t quite reach perfection.
