Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams faced a fine from the NFL after celebrating a touchdown with a dunk over the crossbar.
This 70-yard touchdown catch occurred during a Monday night game, where he aimed to honor Pro Football Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson, who was inducted into the Lions’ Ring of Honor at halftime.
Williams mimicked Johnson’s signature celebration after scoring against the Seattle Seahawks.
Unlike Johnson, who wasn’t penalized for his dunk, Williams received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
The NFL subsequently fined him $14,069 for the celebration.
Additionally, two other players with ties to Alabama football were among the 23 fined by the league for incidents in Week 4. Cleveland Browns defensive end Alex Wright, from Elba and UAB, was penalized $7,743 for roughing the passer in a close 20-16 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Unfortunately, Wright underwent surgery for a triceps injury shortly after and will miss the rest of the season.
Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins, who played at Clay-Chalkville, was fined $22,511 for unnecessary roughness due to helmet use in a 24-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Despite his fine, Collins, who is currently leading the NFL in receiving yards for the 2024 season, was not penalized during the game for that play.
The NFL determines fine amounts using a collectively bargained schedule that outlines penalties for various infractions.
This schedule also includes aggravating and mitigating factors that can influence the final fine amounts.
