Detroit Lions Make Roster Moves, Signing Two Edge Defenders to Practice Squad

The Detroit Lions have made key additions to their roster, signing two edge defenders with potential to contribute to their special teams and linebacker depth. According to Fox Sports reporter Greg Auman, the Lions have brought in former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Cam Gill and seasoned veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad to their practice squad, marking significant moves as the team looks to reinforce its defense.

Cam Gill’s Path to the Lions

Cam Gill, who went undrafted in 2020, spent four seasons with the Buccaneers, contributing primarily on special teams. Throughout his tenure in Tampa Bay, Gill played in 40 games, accumulating 768 snaps on special teams and 184 on defense. Despite limited defensive action, Gill managed to produce 13 pressures and 2.5 sacks. His 2022 season was cut short after suffering a Lisfranc injury during the preseason.

In 2024, Gill joined the Carolina Panthers but suffered an ankle injury in the final preseason game. He produced two tackles and a sack before being released with an injury settlement. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, Gill could potentially fill the role of SAM linebacker for the Lions, a spot currently affected by the injury to Derrick Barnes. Though most of his experience is as an EDGE player, his athleticism and versatility could make him an asset in this position.

Before making his mark on the defense, Gill is expected to contribute on special teams, where he has extensive experience. His ability to shine in this role could pave the way for a future call-up to the game day roster.

Al-Quadin Muhammad Brings Experience

In addition to Gill, the Lions also signed edge defender Al-Quadin Muhammad. A sixth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2017, Muhammad has built an extensive NFL career, appearing in 84 games and starting 34 of them. Over six seasons, he has recorded 12 sacks, 157 tackles, and four forced fumbles. Muhammad’s stints with the Colts, Bears, Cowboys, and now the Lions, give him a depth of experience the team can rely on.

While Muhammad is listed as a linebacker, like Gill, his primary experience has been as an edge defender. At 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds, he provides a slightly larger frame and more defensive snaps compared to Gill. Despite this, Gill holds a significant advantage in special teams experience, making both players valuable for different reasons.

Roster Moves and Implications

To accommodate these signings, the Lions released safety Erick Hallett and kicker Matthew McCrane from their practice squad. As the team navigates injuries and roster management, these moves aim to strengthen both the defense and special teams, providing the Lions with more depth and flexibility as they progress through the season.

With Gill and Muhammad now in the mix, Detroit has bolstered its linebacker depth while creating opportunities for both players to contribute in key areas. Fans will be watching closely to see how these new additions perform, especially in the weeks to come.
