George Pickens’ Eyeblack Sparks Controversy Amid Steelers’ Loss

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens made headlines for more than just his performance in the team’s recent loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The second-year player from the 2022 draft class raised eyebrows by writing an explicit message on his eyeblack during the game, which may now lead to repercussions from the NFL.

In the game, Pickens only managed to pull in three catches for 26 yards, but it was his off-field behavior and post-game discussions that stirred the most attention. The phrase “Open F—ing Always” written on his eyeblack grabbed significant attention, leading to potential fines and criticism from various corners, including the league itself.

Eyeblack Violation Draws NFL Scrutiny

Following the Steelers’ loss, reports emerged that the NFL is reviewing Pickens’ eyeblack message for a potential violation of the league’s strict uniform policy. According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, the league may issue a fine for the offensive phrase displayed during the game, as such actions fall under uniform code violations that are regularly enforced.

Despite the brewing controversy, Pickens remained indifferent when asked by reporters about the issue. “It’s just eyeblack,” he casually remarked, downplaying the situation and suggesting that there was no deeper message behind his choice of words. This nonchalant attitude, however, may not shield him from league penalties, as uniform infractions are taken seriously by NFL officials.

Pickens’ On-Field Struggles and Reaction to the Attention

Adding to the controversy surrounding his eyeblack, Pickens faced criticism for his effort during the game, with fans and analysts pointing out some lackluster moments on the field. His performance against the Cowboys didn’t live up to expectations, and a late-game incident where he yanked Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis down by his facemask only intensified the spotlight on him.

When pressed further on the topic of league rules and fines, Pickens revealed his ignorance of the NFL’s strict policies, particularly when a reporter reminded him of teammate Cameron Heyward’s fine back in 2015 for a similar eyeblack message honoring his late father. “Years ago?” Pickens responded dismissively. “When I wasn’t in the league? So, nah.”

As the Steelers prepare for their upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders, the young wide receiver will look to refocus on the field, while the NFL’s decision on a potential fine for his eyeblack remains pending. Whether this incident becomes a lasting issue or just a brief controversy will depend on how both Pickens and the league respond moving forward.
