Cowboys Trade Proposal Adds $36 Million Asset for QB Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys currently sit at 3-3 and are considered one of the NFL’s most underperforming teams.

Despite ranking 14th in offense this season, they were a top-five unit last year. Quarterback Dak Prescott is not living up to his $60 million-per-year contract, and the team is in need of another playmaker to alleviate some of the pressure on star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Third-year wide receiver Jalen Tolbert has stepped up as the Cowboys’ second option, but the organization could benefit from acquiring a higher-caliber player.

This has led CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell to propose a trade for former All-Pro wide receiver Diontae Johnson, currently with the Carolina Panthers.

Johnson, who is leading his struggling 1-5 team in receptions (29), receiving yards (340), and touchdowns (three), could address the Cowboys’ issues with receivers failing to create separation.

Podell noted that Johnson, at 29, is still in his prime and is entering the final year of his current contract, which aligns with the team’s financial strategy.

If the Cowboys could secure Johnson for a Day 3 draft pick (rounds four through seven), it could be a beneficial move as they aim for a playoff run this year.

Johnson is in the last season of a two-year, $36.7 million deal, meaning Dallas would not have to commit to him long-term beyond 2024.

This flexibility would allow the team to pursue additional wide receiver upgrades next offseason.

As highlighted by Podell, Cowboys receivers are averaging a mere 3.0 yards of separation per route run, ranking them as the second-worst in the league.

In contrast, Johnson averages 5.1 yards of cushion per route, which would significantly help create space for both Lamb and Tolbert.

With Brandin Cooks currently sidelined due to a knee injury, adding Johnson would provide the Cowboys with three legitimate receiving threats, enhancing their offensive capabilities as they strive for a stronge rseason.
