After the Detroit Lions suffered a significant setback with the season-ending injury of All-Pro edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, the team quickly moved to bolster their defensive line.

On Tuesday, the Lions announced the signing of defensive end Isaiah Thomas from the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad, aiming to enhance their pass rush.

On Wednesday, head coach Dan Campbell provided insights into the rationale behind bringing Thomas aboard. He revealed that general manager Brad Holmes and his staff had conducted extensive research on Thomas and other potential additions long before this signing took place.

“Brad has a comprehensive database of players they’ve evaluated who are currently on other practice squads,” Campbell shared with the media.

“Typically, these are players we had a favorable view of during the draft process.

We keep tabs on them, and sometimes it’s about players who have shown some production but are currently without a roster spot or on a practice squad.”

Campbell emphasized that while Thomas adds crucial depth to the roster, it doesn’t signify the end of the Lions’ efforts to fill the significant gap left by Hutchinson’s absence.

“I trust Brad and his assessments,” Campbell stated.

“If he tells me it’s a solid move, I believe him. This felt like the right decision for our team.”

This comes amid discussions about whether the Lions will pursue high-profile replacements for Hutchinson, whose injury is a significant setback for a team pushing hard for a playoff spot.

Although Thomas is a valuable addition, he may not be the final solution to the problem. “This doesn’t mean we’re finished; it simply reflects our current situation,” Campbell noted.

Thomas, who entered the NFL after a successful college career at Oklahoma, now faces the chance to play a pivotal role for the Lions.

While he may not directly replace Hutchinson, he brings competition to a defensive line that needs to adapt in light of the injury.
