The Detroit Lions enjoyed a significant victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6, but not all was well in Arlington last Sunday.
Alongside their win, the Lions faced a major setback when Aidan Hutchinson, their key pass rusher, suffered a broken tibia and fibula in the third quarter.
This injury adds to the challenges for Detroit’s defensive line, already missing Marcus Davenport and Derrick Barnes.
In light of Hutchinson’s injury, there are increasing calls for the Lions to seek a trade for the unhappy Haason Reddick.
Reddick, an accomplished edge rusher, has consistently averaged nearly 13 sacks per season since 2020.
However, he has yet to play this season for the New York Jets, where his discontent is well-known. Following a change in representation, there is speculation that his situation might soon improve.
Many teams believe the Jets may eventually need to part ways with Reddick, and the Lions would be prudent to explore a potential deal.
With ample cap space available, the Lions are positioned to absorb additional contracts as they aim for a Super Bowl title.
To maintain their defensive momentum, trading for Reddick could be a strategic move.
If acquiring Reddick proves unfeasible, the Lions have other potential targets.
One option is Maxx Crosby, a pass rusher for the Las Vegas Raiders. Another possibility is Trey Hendrickson from the Cincinnati Bengals.
If the Lions are bold enough, they could even pursue Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns, though Crosby appears to be the most realistic candidate.
The Raiders’ success under head coach Antonio Pierce at the end of last season hasn’t translated into 2024, as their offensive struggles continue, particularly after star wide receiver Davante Adams was traded to the Jets.
The defense has not performed much better, aside from Crosby’s impressive play in opposing backfields.
Crosby’s frustration with his team was evident when he left the field after a Week 6 loss to the Steelers, where he had a confrontation with a coach.
While this behavior could be seen as typical for him, it does suggest he may be seeking a fresh start.
The Raiders are in a position where they need to capitalize on Crosby’s value and consider trading him.
Given Crosby’s standout performance and his young age of 27, he is likely to command a first-round pick or more in a trade.
Although this price could be steep for the Lions, if they can navigate the financials, envisioning a defensive lineup with Hutchinson on one side and Crosby on the other is enticing.
If the Lions can successfully execute such a deal, they could be laying the groundwork for a potential NFL dynasty in the coming years.
