Enough is enough—after hearing the same claims every season, it’s evident that Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, is untrustworthy.
Every year, I fall for the hype that the Dallas Cowboys will be NFL champions, and every year, it doesn’t pan out.
In the preseason, Jerry Jones presents a shiny new plan, full of big promises, claiming this year will be different. Last weekend, I found myself watching a result I had anticipated all week; the Lions came into ‘Jerry World’ and completely embarrassed us. I’ve accepted that we might not be good enough, and oddly, that’s okay with me.
What’s not okay is Jerry Jones himself. As if having the Lions pull off trick plays with their linemen wasn’t bad enough, Jones then had to address the media after the 47-9 loss, calling it “very concerning” and “very humbling,” expressing shock at what unfolded. The Cowboys’ flagship radio station, 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, does a fantastic job covering the team and other Dallas sports.
During his regular Tuesday radio spot, Jones’ frustration with the questions became evident. When discussing the lack of depth and talent, a connection was made to his inactive offseason regarding signings. Rather than addressing it, Jones threatened the hosts, Shan and RJ, saying, “I’ll get somebody else to ask these questions. I’m not kidding.” It’s worth noting that 105.3 The Fan pays to be the Cowboys’ flagship station, and they’re not owned by Jones.
For him to assume he can threaten someone’s job just because he has money and doesn’t want to face tough questions is why I’ve decided to stop listening. Later, Dianna Russini from The Athletic asked Jones about his reaction to the radio questions, and he remarked, “The wrong ones were doing the questioning. If those had been real fans or football people, I might have had a different answer.”
Shan and RJ are diehard Cowboys fans lucky enough to cover the team daily. For the owner to dismiss them as irrelevant and question their right to ask tough questions shows he’s out of touch. For now, I’ll enjoy the beautiful sport that is the NFL and hope Dak stays healthy every time he steps on the field.
