Detroit Lions player Williams faces a two-game suspension from the NFL for an infringement of performance-enhancing drug rules.
Miami (AFP) – Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has been suspended for an unspecified doping violation, confirming he will miss the team’s next two games.
“This week, the NFL informed me of my suspension for violating the Performance Enhancing Substances Policy,” Williams stated.
“This news was a complete shock that I’m still trying to process.”
Williams will miss Sunday’s home game against the Tennessee Titans and the following game against the Green Bay Packers on November 3. He asserted he has never sought performance-enhancing drugs.
“I don’t take supplements or vitamins and am very cautious about over-the-counter medicine. I have never intentionally taken anything to gain an unfair advantage,” he said.
Having previously served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, Williams noted he will not appeal this latest suspension.
“It’s disappointing to accept this suspension,” he said, adding, “I must take accountability for this situation.”
The NFL operates its own anti-doping program and is not a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code.
Suspensions for violations of the NFL’s policy are generally shorter than those in sports governed by the WADA code.
