Lions Consider Big Trade for Chargers’ Star Defender, Who Has 92.5 Sacks and 575 Total Tackles, to Fill the Void Left by Aidan Hutchinson.
The Detroit Lions are actively looking for ways to fill the void left by Aidan Hutchinson, their top pass rusher, who suffered a season-ending broken leg. His absence has created a significant gap in their defense.
Luckily, Detroit has until the NFL trade deadline on November 5 to make a move. Chris Licata of Athlon Sports has put together a list of potential trade options, recommending that the Lions pursue another elite defensive player.
Replacing Hutchinson’s impact is a considerable challenge, but Los Angeles Chargers star pass rusher Khalil Mack might be a viable choice. The proposal suggests that the Lions could trade their 2025 fourth- and seventh-round picks to acquire Mack.
Mack, an eight-time Pro Bowler and the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year, has an impressive resume. He’s currently under a one-year, $19 million contract, with free agency set for 2025. So far in 2024, Mack has recorded only 2.5 sacks, following a career-high 17 sacks last season.
“Yes, it’s a long shot, and there are cheaper alternatives. However, with Haason Reddick likely staying with the Jets, the Lions need a genuine impact player to take Hutchinson’s place,” Licata wrote on October 24.
“After seven weeks, no Lions defender has more than 19 pressures, while Hutchinson had 45 in just five games,” he added. “Mack, who leads the Chargers in pressures at age 33, continues to be a disruptive force coming off two consecutive Pro Bowl seasons.”
