Za’Darius Smith in Detroit? Lions Consider Pro Bowl EDGE as Hutchinson Replacement

With Hutchinson Out, Lions Target Za’Darius Smith to Bolster Defensive Line Ahead of NFL Trade Deadline

As the NFL trade deadline of November 5 draws near, the Detroit Lions are exploring options to fill a significant void left by Aidan Hutchinson. Following Hutchinson’s unfortunate season-ending tibia injury, the Lions are on the hunt for a reliable EDGE presence to maintain their defensive momentum. One potential solution that has surfaced is Cleveland Browns’ Za’Darius Smith, a versatile Pro Bowl pass rusher who could provide the Lions with the edge they need in more ways than one.

Smith’s Versatility: A Perfect Schematic Fit

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 275 pounds, Smith is known for his adaptability on the field, excelling as both a pass rusher and run defender. His skill set would be an ideal match for the Lions’ defense, bringing both consistency and impact to their line. “Smith’s name has been easily tied to the Lions, especially now in the wake of Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending leg injury,” reported Brad Berreman of SideLion Report on October 22.

So far, Smith has notched four sacks and three tackles for loss this season, earning him a top-50 rating among EDGE defenders by Pro Football Focus. With 15 pressures and an overall grade of 67.6, Smith’s numbers speak to his effectiveness even as he nears the latter stages of his career. As Berreman pointed out, “Smith looks like a great schematic fit for the Lions, versatile as well as equally proficient as a pass rusher and a run defender.”

Affordable Impact Without a Long-Term Commitment

The Lions could acquire Smith without a heavy financial burden. With only a prorated base salary of $1.21 million for this season and a non-guaranteed $1.5 million base salary for next year, Smith presents a low-risk, high-reward option. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations like the Lions, Smith’s availability offers a unique opportunity to gain an impactful player without compromising future salary cap flexibility.

As Berreman highlights, the Browns are likely “trade deadline sellers” due to their 2-6 record, making Smith one of their prime trade assets. Cleveland could view trading Smith as a way to recoup valuable draft capital while also allowing the Lions to address a key defensive need.

A Mutual Interest in Detroit

In addition to being a strong fit on paper, Smith has shown interest in joining the Lions. When asked about Hutchinson’s injury, Smith told The Chronicle on October 18, “If I was to go to Detroit, I would like it, because I get to play Green Bay twice a year and the Vikings twice a year.” The Lions could benefit from having a player who is not only talented but also motivated to face division rivals multiple times a season.

With several other names on the trade board, such as New Orleans Saints’ Chase Young, the Lions have options to weigh. But given Smith’s affordable contract, proven track record, and genuine interest in Detroit, he appears to be a standout candidate for Detroit as they prepare for a high-stakes run toward the postseason.
