Despite having one of the most well-rounded rosters in the league, the Lions have significant weaknesses, particularly in their pass rush. Injuries to Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport have devastated this unit, necessitating a solution before the trade deadline.

Head coach Dan Campbell suggested that a trade might be forthcoming, humorously replying “could be” when reporters inquired if general manager Brad Holmes had discussed any moves, according to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic.

Numerous options are available in the market, but PFF’s Bradley Locker sees New Orleans Saints edge rusher Chase Young as the ideal candidate to address the Lions’ urgent need.

Having played for three teams in the last two seasons, Young is no stranger to adapting to new environments. Now healthy, the former No. 2 overall pick would be a smart addition for the Lions to temporarily replace Hutchinson for the 2024 season.

Although Young hasn’t consistently met high expectations, the former Ohio State standout could be a low-risk, high-reward option for Detroit. The 25-year-old has recorded two sacks and 30 quarterback pressures in eight games this season.

Acquiring Young shouldn’t pose a challenge for the Lions, as a Day 3 pick should be sufficient to bring the 2020 No. 2 overall pick to Detroit. Furthermore, Young’s expiring contract presents minimal financial risk in a potential trade.

While there are more enticing options available, Young would be a valuable asset to Aaron Glenn’s defense. He would step in as the primary pass rusher, strengthening an inconsistent defensive unit. The potential rewards for Detroit are substantial, with negligible associated risk.
