Fans of the Lions share their thoughts on Jameson Williams’ recent traffic stop connected to a supposed concealed weapon.
Fan reactions have been rapid following 7 News Detroit’s report that Detroit police are launching an internal investigation into why Lions WR Jameson Williams avoided arrest after a gun was discovered under his seat during a traffic stop.
Police have also submitted a warrant request to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office for consideration. Fans are expressing disappointment but also support for the 23-year-old Lions wide receiver. In a city passionate about its team, news about the Lions spreads quickly, especially concerning star players.
“Obviously he’s a star on the field, and we need him for our Super Bowl run,” said Lions fan Chase Chapman from White Lake. Williams is currently enjoying his best season in his third year with the Lions, although he’s serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy.
He also faced a four-game suspension last season for breaking the league’s gambling rules. Now fans are learning he may face felony charges for carrying a concealed weapon.
“It feels like it’s been one issue after another,” Chapman noted. “But I believe in him; we’ve seen a lot of growth from him.”
“I think they need to be patient with him; he’s maturing,” added Lions fan Aaron Lowery of Detroit. “But he only has a limited number of chances left.” An additional focus of the investigation is whether Williams received special treatment from police due to his status as a star player, and fans are weighing in on that matter too.
“Just because you’re an athlete and have some status doesn’t mean you should escape penalties like anyone else,” said Lions fan Vincent Richardson from Detroit. While fans are quick to react, they’re also eager to forgive, hoping Williams can sort out his issues and avoid further trouble as the Super Bowl approaches.
“I trust our legal system; I believe Jameson Williams is a good person with good character. He has improved since joining the team,” Chapman expressed.
“Give him another chance and see how he performs because he’s a big asset to the team,” Lowery stated.
