Nothing sums up the Dallas Cowboys’ season quite like Trevon Diggs, still suited up in full pads, confronting a reporter over a tweet.
The 30-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers hadn’t even settled when Diggs angrily approached WFAA sports reporter Mike Leslie.
Leslie had apparently criticized Diggs on social media, implying a lack of effort on a particular play.
Diggs was not pleased with Leslie’s comments. When offered the chance to discuss the play, Diggs—brother of Stefon Diggs—chose instead to respond with “deez nuts.” For those wondering, yes, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is aware of “deez nuts” but not quite in this context.
Jones didn’t comment on the incident, and Diggs even defended his confrontation with Leslie.Since then, tensions have eased.
On Wednesday, Diggs and Leslie patched things up when the WFAA reporter asked him about the play again during a post-practice interview.
“I just thought we were playing football,” Diggs replied. “From my perspective, I didn’t think I did anything wrong. But, everyone has their own opinion.”
When Leslie clarified that his tweet was only about Diggs’ effort on that specific play, the Cowboys cornerback explained his perspective.
“I felt like I was the last line of defense,” he said. “My guy was upfield, and I was behind the safeties. I felt I prevented him from scoring.
I took the highest angle—so yeah. I didn’t think my effort was an issue.” After an 11-minute media session, Diggs turned to Leslie, offering him a can of nuts.
They both apologized: Leslie for misinterpreting the play and Diggs for his reaction.
Cowboys PR told me the video violated their social media policy, so here are some pictures instead.
This could very well be the pivotal moment we mentioned in our original report.
